The MGB, produced by MG (Morris Garages) from 1962 to 1980, was a groundbreaking sports car that set new standards in its class. It combined innovative British engineering, sleek design, and practical affordability, making it a standout choice for drivers in the UK and abroad. Beyond its role as a car, the MGB became a cultural icon, representing the vibrancy and ingenuity of British motoring during its golden age.

MG is a British automotive marque founded by Cecil Kimber in the 1920s; M.G. Car Company Limited was the British sports car manufacturer existing between 1930 and 1972 that made the marque well known. MG cars had their roots in a 1920s sales promotion sideline of Morris Garages, a retail sales and service center in Oxford belonging to William Morris.

MGB is a popular, classic, and famous two-door sports car built by the British Motor Corporation from 1962 to 1980; MG stands for Morris Garages; The B simply shows that it is the second model in their sports car line, following the older MGA.

The 1967 model year marked the last for the MGB Mk I! Most 1967 MGB roadsters were Mk I models. Of the 15,128 sold that year, the U.S. market took 8611, and UK buyers accounted for 2747 units. Just 560 Mk II roadsters were built, including 520 U.S. market cars.

Development of the MGB began in 1958, four years before its ’62 launch and enjoyed a production run of 18 years! Generally, the press loved the MGB, and at just £950 ($2660), well they might. The redoubtable John Bolster, racer and technical editor for Autosport magazine, wrote:

“The world of the sports car is changing fast. We used to admire the type of two-seater that was all engine and performance and precious little else… A sports car must still have the superior performance and handling qualities, but is now expected to have all the creature comforts of a luxurious saloon, which means that noise, vibration and hard suspension are out. Such a car is the MGB…”

The MGB proved its mettle in competitive racing and motoring achievements, earning numerous accolades that underscored its performance, popularity, and reliability.

The MGB also found a place in popular culture, appearing in films like The Italian Job (1969) and The Cannonball Run (1981), and featured in several episodes of Top Gear (2002–2015). Celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Sir Stirling Moss added to its allure, further solidifying its iconic status.
